Emotional Precautions to take during the Corona Virus Pandemic

It’s been a difficult time for the world with the tussle of Corona Virus Pandemic which has spiral anxiety and emotional instability globally. It is even worse with the uncertainty of not knowing when all this will end and having things go back to normal.

The crisis has affected every area of human endeavors with many loss of jobs, economic recessions, and a huge loss in lives and livelihood of millions of people regardless, as a human it is okay to feel anxious as it beyond our control but we can take emotional precautions to mitigate the effect of Corona Virus on our safety and mental health.

Here are some tips:

1. Pay close attention to your feeling and allow yourself to feel them: some of us are guilty of neglecting our feelings and repressing our thoughts making it probably blind to our emotions but in this isolation situation, it is important to pause, focus on your feelings and identify them. Are you feeling Frightened? Concerned? Sad? Disappointed? Lost? Helpless and Alone. It is vital to take cognizance of the feeling to feel better.

2. Do the little things that make you happy or better still things that you enjoy doing like singing out loud with your melodious voice, reading, playing, laughing with family members, eating a balanced diet, and observing self-care.

3. Use Phone, WhatsApp, Skype, Face Time to connect with your loved ones. Tell them you feel lonely and ask them if they would like to engage in voice or video call with them. Surprisingly they might be feeling lonely too.

4. Reduce your consumption of news, social media notifications on Corona Virus updates to avoid been overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed. You can consciously set time of the day that you feel comfortable to listen to the news, this will help you lighten the atmosphere most especially the number of recovery cases.

5. Engage in indoor Exercises. Exercise is important as the brain releases chemicals called endorphins through the body which help to reduce anxiety, depressed mood, and enhance self-esteem.

6. Engage in relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness, and progressive muscle relaxation to relieve any anxious feelings and thoughts.

I want you to know that you are not alone, this is just a transient phase and all will be fine.
